John Rich John has over 30 years of experience in serving the electric and gas utility industries. His professional history includes:

CSC Index/CSC Consulting, Inc. – 7 years in providing management consulting services to electric and gas utilities.
Cygna Energy Services /ABB Impell Corporation – 14 years in providing nuclear plant engineering and operations consulting services.
General Electric Company – 10 years in the design, application, marketing and sales of power industry equipment.

He founded Rich Consulting, LLC in January of 2002 to provide strategic and operational consulting services to client firms in the utility industry.

Recent Projects

Projects that John has developed and managed in recent years include:

Corporate Growth Strategy Development. This effort included an analysis of potential scale benefits to be gained from the acquisition of operating companies across the energy value chain. Financial evaluations were developed for each business area — nuclear and fossil generation, wholesale trading, T&D, retail energy services, etc. A portfolio analysis was also created to determine the market value effect of various acquisition strategies.

Merger Integration for Two Mid-Western Gas Utilities. The project scope included the merger of operational functions such as Customer Care and Billing, as well as corporate functions such as HR, Accounting, Finance and Treasury. The results achieved in the two years since project completion are on-track to meet the $200 million savings objective.

Business Process Improvement for a Combined Electric and Gas Utility. This effort consisted of a multi-year series of business process improvement projects which addressed all T&D, as well as Customer Service and Retail Operations. The cumulative result of these efforts was a 20% decrease in O&M costs per customer over a three year period. System reliability levels were consistently maintained, and Customer Satisfaction levels were improved throughout the course of these projects.

Work Management System Implementation. Led the development of a detailed requirements analysis and business case for a state-of-the-art work and asset management system. Follow-on activities included the re-design of the core operating processes for this distribution utility, detailed implementation planning, and change management support.

Previous Experience

Prior to founding Rich Consulting, John was a Vice President/Partner with CSC Index where he led a number of significant utility engagements in the areas of merger integration, technology selection, and supply chain optimization.

He began his career with the General Electric Company, and over a ten year period, held a progression of utility-related engineering, marketing and project management assignments. As a project manager, he supported both nuclear plant construction and gas turbine installation design projects.
